Personal stories.
Living traditions.

Your own meaning can sit beside history without pretending to be the same thing.

01AcornGrowth, without rushing.

A personal reminder of potential, patience and becoming. Keep the nut and its cap obvious at a small size.

Personal meaning, not a universal ancient promise.

02ConchVoice. Sea. Unfolding.

A shell can hold your own story of finding a voice. A Tibetan Buddhist conch trumpet announces teachings; Vishnu’s conch has a different Hindu context of primordial sound.

These are distinct traditions, not one universal shell meaning.

03CowrieValue. Abundance. Connection.

Cowries have histories as currency and in living Yoruba divination. Their presence on a specific Yoruba inner-head shrine also carries context beyond decoration.

Cowrie is the assumed shell here. A personal sketch is not a consecrated divination arrangement.

04KeyA door you choose.

Access, privacy, a beginning: meanings you may give your own key. In Christian art, Saint Peter’s keys have the specific meaning of the keys of Heaven.

Personal symbolism and religious iconography are not interchangeable.

05CrossFaith, held close.

A Christian cross can express faith in Christ, crucifixion and resurrection. A plain cross and a crucifix are different designs.

Not a universal shorthand for luck. Choose the meaning you intend.

06RiverContinuity. Movement. Return.

A flowing line can be a personal memory of water or change. Ọ̀ṣun has a specific living Yoruba sacred context at the Osun-Osogbo grove.

An inspired riverline is not a sacred credential or a claimed traditional emblem.

07WindChange, with courage.

A soft wind curve can be a personal tribute. Oyá is associated with wind and storms in the Lucumí context documented by Duke’s Sacred Arts project.

Names, colors, numbers and practices vary across communities. This sketch is not an authorized sacred sign.

08Runes & wordsWriting before wishes.

Runes are a Germanic writing system. Historical uses included ordinary messages as well as some magical claims. A modern bindrune should be identified as a new personal design.

No random rune combinations or invented “ancient luck” translations. Check the exact alphabet, period and modern associations.

Òrìṣà, feminine symbols & Oyarishas

Yemoja, Yemayá and Iemanjá belong to related but distinct Atlantic traditions; names and domains vary. Explore the context at MoMA ↗

Feminine may mean softness, strength or change to you. There is no single symbol that defines every woman.

Oyarishas is an original creative brand, not a traditional pantheon or a claim of lineage or initiation. Visit Oyarishas ↗

Small is a design decision

One or two inches.
Room to read.

These are ideas for a conversation with your artist, not ready-to-ink stencils. A simple acorn or short word may suit a small space; complex characters, fine lines and full phrases may need more room.

Have a fluent speaker check the exact wording and a tattoo artist check spacing, placement and colors for your skin. No symbol promises money, protection or a particular outcome.
